The Atlantic, which was previously known as the Atlantic Monthly, was founded in 1857. The Atlantic's first issue was also released that following year. The founders of the magazine are Moses Dresser Phillips and Francis H. Underwood in Boston, Massachusetts. The Atlantic has been successful throughout those years until around the 1970s, where the magazine company almost shut down due to a number of reasons such as . The Atlantic released 12 issues each year throughout these years, to later in 2001 dropping it to 11 issues, then to 10 in 2003.
